When frequently confronted with a situation that can make a person develop panic disorder the first thing to do is to seek medical attention. Actually this is the best advice however, there are also other practical ways to do this.

It is important to identify first the specific causes the anxiety attack before finding a suitable solution. Environmental stressors like work, traffic, family relationship, people who are hard to deal with or a difficult situation can be a source for anxiety attack and panic disorder to occur.

While other causes can include phobias that people likewise experiences. Examples of phobias include the fear of heights or acrophobia, the fear of spiders or arachnophobia or the fear of closed spaces or claustrophobia.

Environmental stressors and phobias can trigger for anxiety to attack to occur without a warning. Most people handle these situations pretty well and if fear strikes them they can immediately regain control of themselves.

However, concern arises for some people who cannot handle the stress and they fail to adjust accordingly to the situation. Their usual reactions are negative. It is in this instance that treating anxiety disorder or panic disorder must be done soon. Failure to treat it can mean bigger problems later on.

In the case of the environmental stressors as the identified source of panic disorder the best way is to remove the stressor in their presence or just allow them to get away from them. One such advice if this happens is to go to a quiet place and try not to think about it. Instead try to think of a happy situation like a child’s birthday or a family vacation.

The important thing is to try to block off temporarily those negative and stressful thoughts and concentrate on something that makes a person happy. This can give the person the necessary bearing in order to regain balance and composure. Once he has taken control of himself he can now rationally deal with the situation.

In the case of phobia, it is better to seek professional medical advice. Doctors and other professionals are trained in handling this kind of a disorder. They can recommend therapy or prescribe drugs or herbal adhd.

However, for anxiety attacks or panic disorder without known causes or causes that are hard to identify below are some practical suggestions:

Although this may sound impossible at first especially knowing that the person is already on the verge of being stressed, relaxing might just work. Trying to be composed will allow the person to think rationally of possible solutions that can be used. The solutions are always in the hands of the person so if he can deal with it rationally so much the better. Some exercises that can help them relax is deep breathing.

Deep breathing will require a person to take a deep breath and hold this for a couple of seconds then slowly exhale. The effect of this effort can be felt immediately because the body tends to relax and be comfortable. And when the person feels that their arms are tightening learning to control the muscles and force it to relax is also a good technique.

Another practical suggestion is to tell the mind that everything will be alright. That there is no need to worry as this problem or concern will soon fade away and all will return back to normal soon. This is related to practicing having a positive mental attitude.

People should learn to accept that panic disorders and its symptoms happens to everyone. Learning to convince that they are in perfect control of the situation and there is no need to panic is a good way to start. This will also require the person to accept the things that they can change and the things that they cannot change. This is part of being proactive.

The above suggestions are self help techniques that may help in treating panic disorder. But a word of caution before people do any of the above suggestions it is better to consult first with their doctors for a more specific advice. They are properly trained to handle such kinds of cases.

While all of us experience some level of anxiety at a few significant moments in our lives, there are others who suffer these feelings at a more intense level. On top of that, they have to suffer through these anxious moments more frequently and for a much longer time than we do.

If you know of someone who goes through this, chances are he or she is suffering from a panic disorder.

Panic disorder is a series of panic attacks. These are also known as anxiety attacks. Often, these attacks are exactly what they are called – unexpected, unprecedented experiences that come as they wish, almost as if they had a life of their own. The sufferer never knows for sure what the anxious, panicky feeling is about. All they know is that they are afraid and fearful of something they are unable to name.

Treatment of panic disorder is imperative. This is because these sudden panic attacks are highly disruptive to the sufferer’s daily life and may even encroach on the lives of those around them. In some severe cases, panic disorder is dangerous as it can induce strong reactions in the sufferer during such attacks, including suicidal thoughts. Imagine being so afraid that you are unable to go to work, pick up your kids from school or even leave your room – that is how intense the feeling of fear is during a panic attack. If that is not bad enough, imagine having those feelings continuously for days and weeks.

How do you tell if someone is having panic disorder? Observe their reactions when they are having one of those anxiety attacks. This entails a sudden, intense fear that lasts for a few minutes and recurs within a few days. The attacks can last anywhere between a minute and twenty so if you do witness someone feeling such intense anxiety without being able to give a reason as to why they feel that way, you might want to suggest they see a doctor and get an accurate diagnosis.

Feelings of anxiety are not the only visible signs of panic disorder. These attacks are always accompanied by any one (or more) of the following:

- Rapid heartbeat. Often, the sufferers will clutch their chest to unconsciously slow down their heartbeat.

- Rapid, shallow breathing. As with the heartbeat, they will suddenly breathe faster but shallower. This leads to hyperventilation which can mean unconsciousness if there is no intervention.

- Dizziness accompanies the quick, shallow breathing as less oxygen reaches the brain.

- Perspiration. They will also perspire intensely during an attack. Just as suddenly, the perspiration stops when the attack is over.

- Trembling. The sudden fear that grips the sufferer is so intense their body trembles and hands shake.

- Feelings of fear. The sufferer is so afraid they will either be unable to move from their spot or act like they are looking for shelter. For instance, they would run for cover or hide to keep themselves safe.

Fortunately, this ailment can be rectified with the right anxiety attack medicine. While a total cure may take years, controlling the frequency and intensity of the anxiety attack can be seen and felt immediately. Before any medicine is taken though, an accurate diagnosis must be made by a trained physician. As panic disorder signs resemble those of a heart attack, it is of utmost importance that the two do not get mixed up. This can be easily done by a series of tests to rule out any cardiac problems.

With treatment of panic disorder, an effective reduction in anxiety attack occurrences is highly encouraging. Most sufferers testify to the quick ability of regaining control of their emotions during an attack with lesser intense reactions to their fears. The more serious cases lessen in their severity – indicating that with medicine, panic disorder is controllable just like any other physical ailment.

Anxiety attack medicine will have to be taken according to prescription for a number of years. Usually, they start of as a-pill-a-day medication that may gradually decrease to as-required. Even as medication is prescribed and taken, doctors remain in the picture to monitor the sufferer’s progress. Good progress may mean a weaning off the meds sooner.

Other complementing treatments are also recommended – counseling, positive thinking, deep breathing exercises, meditation and hypnosis are just some other treatments of anxiety attack that have proven to be effective.

A variety of anxiety attack medication is now available, which when combined with regular therapy helps the patient lead a normal life.

Panic disorder is characterized by the sudden appearance of panic or anxiety without any external cause. Patients suffering from this disorder also have a fear that the panic attack will recur anytime. This impairs their ability to lead normal lives. It hampers their everyday activities.

The panic attack victim shows all the symptoms of panic or anxiety such as an increased or decreased heart beat rate, fast breathing or breathlessness, chest pain, dizziness, nausea, sweating, or numbness. These symptoms can last from between ten minutes to a few hours.

There could be physical causes such as hyperthyroidism, heart or breathing problems. These should first be tested for and ruled out before you seek other causes for panic attacks. Other causes for panic attacks include depression, alcohol abuse, excessive use of nicotine or caffeine, taking certain medicines, such as those used to treat asthma and heart problems, using illegal drugs such as marijuana or cocaine, or living with high levels of stress for a long time. Here too the easier ones should be tested for and ruled out first. Only then should you check for depression or other mood disorders.

If you are wondering how to cope with anxiety attacks help is at hand in the form of anxiety attacks medication. These help reduce the number of anxiety attack episodes, though a complete cure is not possible. For anxiety attacks medicines such as antidepressants with mixed neurotransmitter effects, for instance venlafaxine (Effexor), Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), for instance Tofranil, Norpramin, or Anafranil, and Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), for instance Marplan, Nardil, or Parnate are prescribed. All these are very effective medicines against anxiety attacks. Most patients need to take these medicines for up to a year, while some need to take them for longer.

It is best to combine these medicines with regular cognitive therapy. This helps you change the way you think and, therefore, helps reduce the anxiety attacks. Group therapy and family therapy where the entire family is counseled on how to handle the anxiety attacks are also prescribed.

Regular breathing exercises for up to 20 minutes a day can also help curb anxiety attacks. Other forms of breathing exercises such as yoga can also curb the recurrence of anxiety attacks. Yoga is particularly helpful as it combines breathing exercises with physical exercises. Just consult your physician before you start any exercise regimen.

Other usual forms of reducing stress levels in the body include meditation, listening to music or reading or watching a humorous scene or book. Meditation is particularly helpful in reducing stress levels. Whether you take up yoga or meditation please do remember to go to a proper teacher who will guide you properly keeping in mind your disorder. Wrong practice of yoga or meditation can increase stress levels.

Other ways to reduce stress levels is by exercising regularly. Regular exercise releases a lot of mood uplifting hormones in the body and keeps anxiety attacks at bay. Being physically fit also reduces the occurrence of anxiety attacks.

Please do eat a balanced diet after consulting a dietician. This too controls the occurrence of anxiety attacks.

By taking all these steps in conjunction with each other and mixing and matching them till you find a regimen that suits you, you will be able to keep anxiety attacks under control. These steps both reduce the frequency of attacks and lessen their duration. You benefit from both.

The patient is likely to comply with all these steps and feel more confident of themselves if the patient is taken into full confidence about the nature of the disorder and the treatment being prescribed. It is wrong to conceal the nature of the disorder from the patient. As compliance in the treatment procedure is a must the patient must be well informed and allowed choices where possible.

By keeping the above points in mind it is possible to reduce dramatically the ill effects of the panic or anxiety disorder. The medicines for both are different, but the other lines of treatment are the same.

The patient should not lose heart as most people with panic or anxiety disorder continue to lead normal lives after being properly diagnosed and treated. It is only when you postpone treatment that the ill effects last longer.

Anxiety Disorders appear on the Baseball Diamond
While historically, a disabled athlete has been anticipated to have been injured, as of late, anxiety disorders have claimed players' field time and altered the scope of anxiety disorders in society. Public exposure of panic disorders is on the rise, and with baseball players being afflicted by them, the diagnoses are in question. Are athletes treading the line of cop-out and serious social disability?

Anxiety Disorders appear on the Baseball Diamond
While historically, a disabled athlete has been anticipated to have been injured, as of late, anxiety disorders have claimed players' field time and altered the scope of anxiety disorders in society. Public exposure of panic disorders is on the rise, and with baseball players being afflicted by them, the diagnoses are in question. Are athletes treading the line of cop-out and serious social disability?

Stress is an insurmountable characteristic of a successful career as a professional athlete. In recent years, it has been the cause of several MLB players' appearance on disabled lists rather than the field. Joey Votto of Cincinnati cited it as the cause for his June 2009 placement on the disabled list, and many other players have joined him. Some medical professionals have expressed concern that as anxiety disorders become more prevalent in sidelined athletes, the serious nature of panic disorders will also be sidelined, as overdiagnosis may become an issue.

A medical history is required to demonstrate a panic disorder, and medical professionals have begun to speculate that some of the anxiety disorders that players have cited for their D-listing have not been legitimate, as anxiety disorders don’t develop overnight.

Nevertheless, the severity of anxiety disorders cannot be underestimated, and while their prevalence in the MLB is on the rise, this may not be a credible measure of these disorders' occurrence.
