Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche – Using panic attacks for meditation
A clip from "Joy of Living: A Public Talk" DVD, Recorded in August, 2007. In this talk based on his groundbreaking first book, The Joy of Living (Harmony Books), world-renowned Buddhist teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche invites us to join him in unlocking the secrets behind the practices of meditation. Working with neuroscientists at the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, he provides clear insights into modern research indicating that systematic training in meditation can enhance activity in areas of the brain associated with happiness and compassion. He has also worked with physicists across the country to develop a fresh, scientifically based interpretation of the Buddhist understanding of the nature of reality. Mingyur Rinpoche weaves together the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, neuroscience, and quantum physics in a way that will forever change the way we understand the human experience. what a silly teaching. And this is a meditation teacher!
He is very honest telling publicly that he suffered also under panic !
I love him he is so great.

@thatwonblackguy
don't panik just attack ,-)
i told this to i woman i knew .. to use her panik and/or anxieties and maditate with or about them, but she loved her feelings too much, so i hope she lives still with her feelings/thoughts
i learnt something about anger
anger as an enemy grows
the clear and pure anger vanishes in less than a second
this was so helpful for my start. today im deciding to try meditation for my panic attacks and after watching this i feel so much more confident about getting over them
A very engaging teacher!
thank you rinpochela
@imanselmo i hope my girl never stops giving me dome
For whom it may concern: after 10 years of teaching the Karma Kagyu tradition of Mahamudra exhaustively all over the globe, Mingyur Rinpoche will be entering his third 3 year retreat starting May 2011. While he will be missed by his students, the extra 20,000+ hours of practice will undoubtedly be a great benefit to all sentient beings.
@eggnogger5 I hope that's not the only thing you got from the video.
thats true before i heard this guy speak … 2 years ago thats exactly how i got ridof my panick attacks i became aware of them imstead of letting them control me now i dont get them
The open accepting mind in meditation embraces fear and it vanishes! Fear becomes fuel for that open mind and loving attitude! And – meditation is not only sitting in lotus, so on… It is real when it is transposed in every movement, feeling and thought in our daily life! money n all reality bs matters but main thing is ur mind to be calm and ease by meditation n other technqiues.
lol I feel so much better now. He is so funny haha.
After his words, my life's view changed in 2009.
he put up 2 fingers and said 3 years haha
you are so right
Great!
I'm into the 4th chapter of his book 'The joy of living' and it is simply amazing! It is a must read book…an absolute gem…
makyoakuma – i have been overcoming anxiety attacks through his teachings. whenever i get a slight symptom of anxiety, i greet my anxiety. i say hello anxiety. or hello fear. thinking of anxiety as a friend helps it go away more quickly. it becomes shy.
Thanks uploader, this guy has a very warm and friendly style.
MakyoAkuma -> My interpretation is that Panic is created for a reason, it is based on our thoughts/ worries/ emotions. It can be very useful for these to be brought to the surface (ie. in a panic attack) so you can overcome them.
Mind, I'd rather not have panic attacks as they are the most horrible experiences I've encountered in my life, but his wisdom (which I'm guessing is explained more fully in his dvd) is quite helpful.
Thank you very much for posting this, and thank you to Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche.
What is anyone else's understanding of what he means by making fear into a friend?
