Rice Bran is the newest and greatest food source that has been brought to market for our use in recent history. Rice Bran has the potential to provide nutrition to many people. The fact that it is very nutritious and can be worked into many of the foods we eat today is great in and of itself, but the fact that Rice Bran is so abundant, it can be used as a food source for people that are starving all over the globe thanks to some pioneering scientists and hard work. As an Example, Rice and Shine meal replacement drink is made with Rice Bran.
Rice bran is removed in the milling process of making white rice. As the brown
cover from the rice kernel is removed, it is processed and the enzyme that causes
the rice bran to go rotten, is deactivated. This results in rice bran now having
a shelf life of 2 to 3 years. While its superb nutritional value is well known,
Rice Bran was determined to be unusable by the FDA. the reasoning behind this
we because it rots or turns bad quite readily. subsequently, 16 millions tons
of the stuff had to be burned, turned into the soil or discarded all together.
It was known as the worlds largest unusable food resource. Not any more.
Many people suffer from diabetes, cancer and other debilitating diseases these
days. The root cause of much of this disease is from nutrition deficiency. Allot
of the processed foods we eat are not very nutritious and consequently, we can
be deficient in many important minerals and vitamins necessary for proper function
of the body systems. Rice bran being a whole food provides many of the necessary
vitamins and minerals necessary for good proper nutrition, all from one source.
Joining the USDA in 1981, Nutracea set out to develop the process where they
could stabilize the rice bran. The result is Rice and Shine. It is not only
loaded with nutrients inherent in the rice bran, but it comes in a form that
is so bio-available, that the human system is able to absorb the nutrients optimally.
Patty McPeak and her Nutracea team invented the equipment and processes that
stops an enzyme responsible for causing the rice bran to turn rancid. The enzyme
is deactivated just after the rice bran is stripped off the brown rice kernel
during the the process of milling. Because of this breakthrough, Rice bran will
now last for 2 to 3 years. It is now possible to include rice bran into many
of the foods we eat.

source. These are just the first products made that use rice bran, but as you
can see, the future for rice bran and the benefits it provides is very encouraging.
